Cybersecurity in Healthcare: Insights from Security Professionals

The European Cyber Security Organisation (ECSO) has been actively working with its members and the ECSO CISO Community from the healthcare sector to gather insights on challenges and propose solutions.

These findings were presented to the European Commission, following President Ursula von der Leyen’s announcement to develop an Action Plan on cybersecurity in healthcare, as outlined in her inception speech and the Political Guidelines for the Next European Commission 2024-2029.

Drawing from the first-hand expertise of security professionals, we have identified 23 challenges and 49 suggested solutions prioritised based on complexity and criticality, across the following topics:

  • Competing priorities and sectoral culture
  • Regulations compliance workload and benefits
  • Medical products development lifecycle
  • Sector-tailored frameworks
  • Legacy systems and practices
  • Supply chain management
  • Attracting and retaining talent
  • Budget constraints

An online session to discuss these findings is planned for 30 January 2025 at 14.30 CET. Stay tuned for an engaging discussion on the key challenges and proposed solutions for improving cybersecurity in the healthcare sector.
