Cybersecurity has become an essential asset and a confidence-building lever for the promotion and use of new technologies. In short, cybersecurity is key to the success of digital transformation and economic recovery. In this sense, the business fabric needs to be surrounded by a cybersecurity ecosystem that can provide effective and cutting-edge protection services and tools. However, this cybersecure habitat is not easy to achieve and has become a strategic issue.

The Cybersecurity Agency of Catalonia is the body that governs cybersecurity in Catalonia, under the strategic direction of the Government of Catalonia, in coordination with the public sector, the private sector and civil society. On an annual basis, the Agency carries out a study of cybersecurity companies with a presence in Catalonia with the aim of ensuring that it has its own qualified cybersecurity business sector, with the most suitable professionals and the capacity to meet the existing demand.

However, it is often difficult to set clear and objective criteria for identifying and classifying the companies that work in cybersecurity. In light of this, the ECSO Cybersecurity Market Radar has become an essential visualisation toolThus, in the 2020 analysis, the use of the Market Radar has allowed the Cybersecurity Agency of Catalonia to identify, in a systematic and standardised way, which companies work in cybersecurity and have the capacities required to Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover.

In conclusion, 361 companies with a presence in Catalonia were identified, employing 6,900 workers and with a turnover of 820 million euros directly linked to cybersecurity. It is worth noting that 13% of the companies are start-ups and 32% are less than 10 years old. In terms of their capabilities according to the Market Radar, 86% of the companies are dedicated to Protect, most notably providing services and products aimed at Backups, Storage Security, PC/Mobile/End Point Security and Firewalls/NextGen Firewalls. Half of the companies focus on Identify, where IT Service Management and Identify Management are the most common services offered. Less than half of the companies are engaged in Respond, Detect or Recover. These findings will enable public institutions and the market itself to take measures aimed at consolidating and strengthening Catalonia’s cybersecurity ecosystem.
