ECSO shares knowledge on cybersecurity and data protection at the 2022 Privacy Symposium
Data, privacy and cybersecurity. These were the main topics discussed by ECSO at the Privacy Symposium event, which took place in Venice on the 6th and 7th April, together with representatives from Google, ENISA, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), the Italian Data Protection Supervisory Authority, the IoT Forum and European Centre for Certification and Privacy, the Italian Institute for Privacy and Data Valorisation (IIP), the US Department of Justice, the UN SR PRIVACY and the University of Münster.
In an event focused on privacy and GDPR, ECSO contributed with knowledge on cybersecurity, showing its importance and value in technologies such as AI, IoT, 5G, and more.
ECSO Head of Sector Roberto Cascella spoke about cybersecurity and data protection, as well as digital transformation and technologies that define today’s data-driven society. “With data acquiring such importance, it is fundamental to have informed citizens”, said Mr. Cascella. “Citizens should have more control and knowledge about their personal data, and companies have the opportunity to ensure this privacy by defining new business models, but above all, a forward-thinking cybersecurity strategy is what is mostly necessary to meet forthcoming digital challenges and maintain trust among stakeholders.”, he added.
In fact, when it comes to the protection of data, cybersecurity plays a crucial role, which is why a proper strategy is necessary. With its working group on SRIA and Cyber Security Technologies, ECSO also covers this aspect. “One goal at ECSO is to create an ecosystem based on different communities where technologies meet a variety of stakeholders (also then ones who are not experts in cybersecurity) in order to better implement innovations that can be used efficiently and stimulate society and the economy as a whole, whilst ensuring people’s fundamental rights”, he concluded.
As the European Cyber Security Organisation, ECSO works on growing such community, also through the cooperation with the European institutions, by preparing inputs to the priorities of European funding schemes (e.g., Horizon Europe and Digital Europe Programme).
